ABOUT NORTHWOODS SWISSY
Welcome to the home of Northwoods Swissies. We are located in Banks, Oregon, operated by myself (Rebecca Martin) with the support of my husband (who primarily spoils the dogs rotten). We enjoy our dogs as members of our family, and fully recognize that they are a special breed. Swissies are a big commitment in many ways (literally), so please explore this site for more information to help you decide if a swissy is right for you. You will also find information on our dogs and upcoming litters. If you do not find an answer to what you're looking for, please contact us and I will help find the answer if I cannot provide one myself. Northwood's is a small operation, with a limited number of dogs. I am a small animal veterinarion in Portland, with special interest in reproduction and dentistry. We only produce 1-2 litters per year, and try to keep close contact with the families who welcome our puppies into their lives. Additionally, we are always available to support these families should they need medical or other other advise on their dogs throughout their lives.
When we decided we were ready for a dog, it was easy to decide on a working breed as we enjoy hiking, camping and other outdoor activities. We also wanted a dog that is sturdy, protective, yet loving and affectionate with family members. It was again easy to narrow down the breed choices as I have been lucky enough to meet most of the AKC recognized breeds through my profession. Eventually we decided on the Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. Thanks to Susan Spaeth, Bella joined us at the age of 9 weeks old, and was a once in a lifetime pet. Initially intended as a companion, I started screening Bella for health concerns, starting with her eyes when Bella was only 12 weeks old since that is the earliest any testing can be done. As she grew up and earned her titles, passed all her health clearances, we decided to breed her and pass along her temperament. Thus was the begining of Northwoods Swissies. Though breeding is a challenge, we find the resulting relationships very fulfilling. We also continue to enjoy the other activities we can share with our dogs throughout the beautiful pacific northwest.
