Breeding swissies is a hobby for us, certainly not an income source. Breeding is a huge undertaking which involves high costs of care, genetic testing, evaluations of health and conformation, as well as significant breeding and whelping costs.  We breed an average of 2 litters per year, with any profits being used for the care of our dogs. We breed for ourselves, to keep alive the legacy and amazing personality that embodied the one and only Bella (Foxglove's Swiss Belleflower), while trying to improve upon the aspects of her that were not as amazing. We love knowing that most of our litters have a little bit of her somewhere in the pedigree. My heart smiles when we see her familiar expression, markings, or mannerisms in the photos of a Northwoods puppy. We are proud of the fact that several families have come back to purchase a second or third swissy for their family and feel this is a reflection of the hard work that goes in to responsible breeding.

We put our heart and soul into these dogs and are heavily invested in their well being. People always ask how we can stand to let puppies go after raising them and getting so attached. The answer is two fold.
1) I cry. Watching a puppy leave is not an easy thing to do. But the rewards of knowing a family is more complete because of our breeding, outweighs the heartache of a departure. We try our best to keep in touch with families for the life of their pup. We often watch puppies for our local families when they vacation and we have a private facebook group to bring families together and share their journey.
2) We are picky in our placements and feel confident that our puppies are going in to good hands.  It is also our sincere hope to match each puppy with the family best suited to their lifestyle and needs. The purchase price of a puppy is typically $3000 to $4000, depending upon the stud fee of the male. Occasionally we will have juveniles or adults available for placement. The typical fee for an adult is $1200-1800. This includes first vaccinations, deworming, external parasite control, microchip, and AKC registration. This initial cost is small in comparison to the costs of caring for the dog over its lifetime. You can expect to pay $100 or more a month for the routine needs of a swissy, with that cost going up with age. The potential health costs for medical emergencies is significant. This is in part because everything a swissy needs is comparatively larger than most other breeds but also partly because many swissy emergencies require urgent surgery which can cost $2000-5000. Our puppies are all sent to their new homes with a certificate for 1 month of insurance through Trupanion's breeder program. After that, the new owner is required to maintain insurance through the company of their choice. If you are not prepared for the financial needs of a swissy, we recommend you consider another breed that may be less financially demanding. If the commitment of a swissy doesn't sound so bad an the information you've found on this website has not scared you, then we look forward to hearing from you and welcoming you to the Northwoods Swissy Family.
